Hreflang Best Practices
- • Always use self-referencing hreflang tags — each page should list itself
- • Include an x-default tag pointing to a language selector or your main version
- • Use ISO 639-1 language codes (e.g., en, fr, de) and optionally ISO 3166-1 region codes
- • Every page in the set must have the same set of hreflang tags
- • Return links must be bidirectional — if Page A links to Page B, Page B must link back
- • Place HTML tags in the
<head>section, or use HTTP headers for non-HTML resources
